Is the hoarfrost on the surface of grapes pesticide residue?

The summer heat is getting stronger, and it’s time to show off grapes again. Unlike apples and watermelons, grapes have a layer of white frost on their surface, which makes them look unclean. Some people always wonder - is it pesticides?

In fact, it is just the "fruit powder" on the grape skin, which is a sugar alcohol substance produced by the grape itself and attached to the grape skin. It is mainly used to prevent water evaporation and resist bacterial infection, and is the protector of grapes. This substance is insoluble in water and is not harmful to human health, so there is no need to worry.

Of course, it is normal to use pesticides during the growth process of grapes, and there may also be certain pesticide residues on the surface. But as long as it does not exceed national standards, it is safe to eat. If you are really worried, you can cut the grapes into small bunches before cleaning, and use running water to wash away the floating particles and impurities on the surface. Then add starch or flour to the water and stir evenly, put the grapes in, soak for 2-3 minutes and then wash them with running water several times, so that the washed grapes will be cleaner.

In the GB 2763-2021 "Standard for Maximum Residue Limits of Pesticides in Food" implemented in our country, the pesticide residue limit requirements for grapes have reached 216 items. Four new items were added in the 22-year supplementary version, totaling 220 items, which is an increase of 50% compared with the 2019 version. For the remaining items, the maximum residue limit value of some newly added items reaches 0.01mg/kg.

There are 101 items for raisins and 40 items for grape juice.

Therefore, as long as the product meets national standards, it is safe and can be eaten with confidence.
